Thanks in part to the Campbell River Salmon Foundations donation of $9,200, young coho reared at Quinsam Hatchery in Campbell River will be inoculated against the vibriosis bacteria prior to being released. This is a pilot project that intends to help reduce the mortality rate of juvenile salmon when they first reach the ocean.
The vaccination process has been used for years in aquaculture and has been very successful. Quinsam Hatchery, as well as other salmon enhancement facilities, has been vaccinating chinook salmon smolts for the vibriosis bacteria for years.
The CRSF would like to thank Marine Harvest and the Mercury Marina and Trailer Park for their generosity in donating $1000 and $2000 respectively towards this program.
